Alex Gray is the designer and maker behind Studio Colibri, an art, furniture, and design venture rooted in place. Trained as a mechanical engineer at Georgia Tech, Alex left engineering to pursue a more grounded life, eventually settling in the southern Appalachian mountains near Asheville. Influenced by years spent in North Georgia, the California desert, and the Pacific Northwest, his work reflects many of the environments that shaped him, from the apocalyptic metal art of the desert to the dark forests of the mountains. Using locally sourced materials, Alex creates pieces that contrast gnarled wood with clean lines, rusted steel with satin finishes, exploring themes of decay and renewal, life and death. Beyond the studio, his work in soil regeneration, earth skills, and sustainability informs a practice centered on rebuilding connection to place, to community, and to the natural world.
