The Artist: A Journey from Science to Silver
Rejane Pratelli's childhood was split between the majestic French Alps and the sun-drenched region of Provence, cultivating a deep early interest in art. Thanks to a multi-talented craft aficionado mother and a father who prioritized museum visits, she was constantly exposed to creativity and art history, prompting her to try various craft techniques herself. This early life also instilled an unquenchable curiosity and a drive to understand processes down to the smallest detail.
This fascination with life’s sheer magic eventually led her to pursue a rigorous academic career in biology. While academic research provided a framework of precision, rigor, and logic, arts and crafts became the vital creative outlet to balance the demanding structure of science.
A New Purpose in Silversmithing
A few years after settling in southwestern Virginia, a serious health crisis forced her to re-evaluate her high-stress research career. Art and crafts became instrumental, first in her physical recovery, then in finding peace of mind and a new sense of purpose.
She had been interested in metal work for over a decade, and silversmithing provided the perfect new avenue for expression. A single beginner workshop was enough to get her completely hooked, despite finger movements still being impaired from her illness. Her skills rapidly improved with dedicated practice, and her passion for silversmithing continues to grow every day.
Global Inspiration
Having lived in and explored numerous countries, she has had the invaluable opportunity to learn about a vast array of traditional crafts. This exposure to diverse cultures and varied landscapes has uniquely shaped her views on the world and her art.
Today, the unique twists and turns of her life—from the rigorous details of science to her global experiences—translate directly into the one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry she creates in her home studio.
